Orofacial Pain Treatment

When Dental Pain Isn't a Tooth Problem.

Persistent face, jaw, ear, or head pain that no one can explain has answers. They just usually require a provider to find them.

    What is orofacial pain?

A specialty for pain that crosses disciplines.

Orofacial pain is a recognized dental specialty focused on chronic pain conditions of the head, face, mouth, jaws, and neck. It exists because these conditions don't fit cleanly into general dentistry, ENT, or neurology — they live in the spaces between.

Dr. Schmidt completed a 3-year residency at Walter Reed in exactly this. Most of our patients arrive having seen multiple providers without an answer.

    Our approach

How we diagnose what others can't.

Our diagnostic evaluation considers the cranial nerves, the masticatory muscles, the temporomandibular joints, the cervical spine, and the upper body — alongside the physical, mental, and emotional lifestyle factors that often perpetuate symptoms.

We take time. First visits are extensive 1:1 conversations, not 15-minute slots. Imaging is used selectively to confirm or rule out — never to lead the diagnosis.

Treatment is reversible, minimally invasive, and individualized. The goal isn't to mask the pain; it's to identify the actual driver and address it.

    Frequently asked

Unfortunately, yes. Orofacial pain conditions are underdiagnosed because most providers don't have specialty training in this area. A structured specialty evaluation often produces an answer in a single visit.
