TMJ / TMD Treatment

TMJ & TMD Treatment That Actually Targets the Cause.

If a night guard didn't fix it, you're not alone. Real TMD care starts with figuring out what's actually wrong.

    What is TMD?

Not one diagnosis — a family of conditions.

TMD (temporomandibular disorder) is a group of conditions involving the jaw joints, the muscles that move the jaw, or both. Two patients with the same complaint of 'TMJ pain' often have very different underlying problems — which is exactly why generic treatment so often fails.

At MCFPS, every TMD evaluation considers the joint, the muscles, the cervical spine, the cranial nerves, and the lifestyle factors that perpetuate pain. The diagnosis comes first. Treatment is built from there.

    Our approach

Why TMD is so often misdiagnosed — and how we evaluate it.

Standard dental and medical training spends little time on chronic head, face, and jaw pain. There is no single test that names TMD; the diagnosis comes from a careful, structured evaluation.

Our first appointment is long. We take a thorough history, examine the muscles and joints, assess range of motion and posture, and screen the cranial nerves. Imaging is used selectively — to confirm or rule out, never to lead.

From there, treatment is individualized, reversible, and minimally invasive whenever possible. Most patients respond to non-surgical, conservative care.

    A complete picture

TMD shows up far beyond the jaw.

Headaches behind the eyes, ear ringing, neck tightness, sore teeth — these aren't separate problems for many of our patients. They're the same problem, expressing itself in different places.

It varies — dull aching in the jaw or temples, sharp pain with chewing, ear fullness, headaches, or pain that radiates into the neck. Many patients describe a constant low-grade tightness with periodic flares.
